The California Dogface Butterfly is the State Insect for California. Yes we have a state insect!
This image is a real butterfly, the male dogface butterfly is pictured on the front of the t-shirt and the female dogface is pictured on the back of the t-shirt. The shirt has the common name and the scientific name for this species.
The host plant for the California Dogface Butterfly is the False Indigo. False indigo (Amorpha californica), is a riparian shrub that grows among poison oak and willows and along stream banks, often in steep and isolated canyons.
The caterpillars, or baby butterflies, eat the host plant and as adults they lay their eggs on this plant.
The dogface butterfly is found only in California, but it’s losing its natural habitat due to rapid California development.
Just as the beautiful Monarch needs milkweed, the beautiful California Dogface needs false indigo or there will be no more Adult California Dogface Butterfly.
