We think that the world will always be filled with an infinite number of beautiful butterflies, but this butterfly, the Xerces Blue Butterfly, is extinct.
This species was common in San Francisco, CA until its habitat, now the Presidio, was removed. Without its host plant it couldn't survive.
Our goal at the Bohart Museum is not only informing the public about beautiful and interesting insects but also to educate that they are fragile and worth protecting.
Many people have said, " I don't see as many butterflies around as I used to see when I was younger..."
True, it's not a cute fuzzy mammal, but its beauty is still unique. Unfortunately this one could not be saved.
